The postpartum stage isn’t just about caring for the newborn – it’s about nourishing momma’s body, mind, and soul. A new mom’s personal needs are not just luxuries. They are crucial for her recovery and success in her new role.
Rest and Sleep- Getting sufficient sleep is a challenge with a newborn, especially if you’re breastfeeding. Just do your very best to get as much sleep as you can. Those early days, there is no “day” and “night”. You have “waking hours” and “sleeping hours”. Keep reminding yourself that one day you WILL return to a more regular schedule.
Nutrition and Hydration- Hydration is SOOOO important. This is the cup I use, and I love it because it holds a TON of water. And you will be THIRSTY when you’re nursing or pumping. It’s also super important to feed yourself! This is why you hear people talk about freezer meals. They come in handy here. Easy meals and healthy snacks will be your BFFs.
Gentle Stretches- Those early postpartum days can be rough on the body. For me, this consisted of navigating the new world of breastfeeding and co-sleeping, so my neck and shoulders were screaming. Quick videos like this one can make a world of difference.
Support Systems and Resources- It really does take a village. Family, friends, and online resources can be very comforting during this time. I’d love to have you in my Facebook group too!
Mental Health Self-Care Practices- Remember to be gentle with yourself. You were chosen as this baby’s momma for a reason, and you two will get through this together. You’re navigating your new role as a mother as baby is discovering an entirely new world. You’re both in newness.
Relaxation Techniques- Deep breathing, mindful check-ins, I’ve created a whole checklist for this! The New Mom’s Stress Relief Techniques checklist. You can grab it here.
Time for You- A huge part of feeling like yourself again is doing the things you love and having a little time to yourself. Any “me-time” you can get will be very beneficial for you.
Especially for mommas like us, it’s crazy how our own self care completely goes out the window once baby is born because your mind is 24/7 set on your babe. I’m here to tell you, you NEED to take care of yourself too. And you CAN do this while keeping your baby first! I show you how in Thriving Momma Blueprint. You take care of you in the pockets of time you have around taking care of baby. Self care does not have to be time consuming.
Remember: you are worth every moment of rest, every bite of nutritious food, and every stretch that brings you closer to your pre-pregnancy self – but better.
