Welcoming a new baby into your life is an indescribable joy. It can also come with a whirlwind of new responsibilities, including managing your budget to accommodate all the new expenses. Having an idea of what’s ahead can help you feel confident about the journey and free to embrace your new role as a momma.

Essential Baby Expenses

Diapers and Baby Wipes: One of the first recurring costs that hit new moms is the need for diapers and wipes. I personally was very concerned about the harmful ingredients found in most conventional diapers and wipes, so these are the disposables I buy (they’re on a subscription and get sent straight to my door), and these are the wipes I have on hand (also on subscription).

For the most part though, I use a cloth diapering system. There’s less concern about cost, sizing, harmful ingredients (they’re 100% organic cotton), and blowouts.

Formula or Breastfeeding Supplies: Regardless of whether you decide to use formula or breastfeed, both choices will affect your monthly budget.

Baby Food and Feeding Supplies: Whether you start with purees or go straight to solids, a new section in your grocery list and budget will gradually become necessary.

Clothing and Accessories: You’ll be periodically expanding your little one’s wardrobe and filling in gaps where you see them. (Hello, sun hat.)

Personal Care Products and Hygiene: Baby soap, baby lotion, and diaper rash cream will be regularly stocked. Also, starting around one year old, you may consider bringing your little one in for haircuts.

Childcare: Not everyone will have this expense, but for some, it certainly deserves a spot on the list!

Healthcare Expenses

Doctor Visits and Wellness Checks: Whether it’s just a checkup or your sweet babe is sick, visits to the pediatrician should be considered in your expenses. Chiropractor visits also have a regular spot on our calendar for overall wellbeing.

Vitamins, Supplements, Medicine: From Vitamin D drops to the occasional cold medicine, you’re investing in their health proactively.

Health Insurance: Knowing what’s covered and what’s not in your health insurance policy can you plan your finances effectively.

Housing and Utilities

Increased Utility Bills: When adjusting your utilities budget, remember to consider the constant usage of lights, heating, and appliances throughout the day. While it may be difficult to determine the exact impact on your expenses, it’s important to keep this in mind.

Tips for Managing Baby Expenses

Develop a budget that outlines all your monthly child-related expenses and helps you keep track of spending. Second-hand or gently-used baby items can save you a lot of money. Embrace the second life of baby blankets and appreciate the savings!
