When a baby is first born, their gut is not fully developed. It takes a good 3 years for a child’s gut to fully mature.

Additionally, over-prescription of antibiotics is a widespread issue highlighted by Dr. Andrew Weil, MD, as truly necessary 1 out of every 10 times they’re prescribed.

Many babies nowadays are also given antibiotics directly after birth.

Antibiotics completely demolish the good and bad bacteria in the gut. And the gut is the powerhouse that keeps the body going, vital, and healthy. More than 70% of the immune system is housed in the gut, so it’s especially important we take good care of it.

Probiotics, unlike antibiotics, nurture the good bacteria essential for a healthy gut. Striking a balance between good and bad bacteria is key to optimal gut function and overall well-being.

With that being said, probiotics are almost always a good idea. There may be exceptions, like for immunocompromised, so you can absolutely ask your doctor if you’re concerned.

My baby’s pediatrician had him on probiotics since infancy. And I truly feel that’s a major reason why he doesn’t have very many “poop problems.” Fewer than 3 bowel movements in a week is an indication of constipation, and probiotics help combat that.

Probiotics also support a healthy gut which supports overall whole-body health, so it’s really a no-brainer if you ask me.

Yes, even if Baby is breastfed. Your breast milk is liquid gold. I’m not denying that at all. Breast milk is composed of so many different nutrients (including probiotics!) that support a healthy gut, and supplementing with additional probiotics can enhance these benefits.

The most important message for new mothers is to trust in the remarkable force of nature that is your breast milk, while also staying informed and open to additional support when necessary. Enhanced gut health is undoubtedly an invaluable asset in the lifelong health and well-being of your little one.

P.S. This is the probiotic I take and love. They also have one for kids I introduced to my son at a lose dose just before he turned 2.
