One of the biggest adjustments for new moms is adapting to a baby’s unpredictable schedule. Newborns require constant attention, from feeding to diaper changes to sleep cycles. It’s crucial to understand that your days (and nights) will revolve around your baby’s needs, which can make it challenging to find time for yourself.
Finding my balance to take care of myself while putting my baby first is what inspired me to create my signature course: Thriving Momma Blueprint. This is where I take you step by step in how to take care of yourself without sacrificing your child’s needs. Let’s scratch the surface a bit:
Newborns typically sleep in short bursts of 2-3 hours. Utilize these naps not just for chores but also for brief moments of rest or relaxation.
Whether breastfeeding or bottle-feeding, feeding sessions take up a significant portion of your day. Try to plan around these times to create pockets of personal time.
Embrace the unpredictability. Flexibility is key as your baby’s needs change frequently.
Self-care is essential for maintaining your mental and emotional well-being.
Use small windows of time, like when your baby is napping or occupied with a toy, for quick self-care activities such as enjoying a cup of tea, reading a few pages of a book, or meditating.
Engage in activities that allow you to include your baby, such as a walk in the park or a calming yoga session with your baby in the playpen with you – maybe in the baby boat!
Coordinate with your partner or a trusted caregiver to take over baby duties for scheduled short breaks, allowing you regular intervals to recharge.
They say it takes a village, and it’s true! Asking for help and building a support system is vital for finding time for yourself.
Don’t hesitate to lean on your loved ones. They can provide much-needed breaks, emotional support, and practical assistance.
You can also join local or online mom communities. I’d especially love to have you in my group here! Sharing experiences and gaining advice from others in similar situations can offer comfort and practical solutions.
You may also consider hiring a babysitter or a postpartum doula for extra hands-on support.
While immediate self-care is essential, don’t lose sight of your long-term interests and hobbies. Start with small, achievable goals for reintroducing your hobbies. For example, dedicate 15 minutes a day to a hobby you love.
As your baby grows, their schedule will become more predictable. Use this to your advantage by setting aside regular time slots for your passions.
Motherhood is a journey filled with joy, challenges, and profound changes. While finding time for yourself may seem daunting, it is entirely possible with the right strategies and support systems in place. By understanding your new schedule, seizing micro moments, leaning on your support network, and planning for the future, you can carve out those essential pockets of ‘me-time.’
Remember, taking care of yourself isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity. Embrace this new chapter with patience and love, and prioritize self-care to ensure you are the best version of yourself for your baby and for you.
